General Permit Application Tips

Please reach us at john@seattlepermits.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Each project is unique; there is no one size fits all application:

Many projects require a basic checklist and drawings to both determine what the project may need and what requirements will be necessary for the application. In most cases, you will need a site plan. This shows departments the existing design of the building and property and proposed - the proposed work and where it is in relation to the property lines and existing buildings. Depending on the complexity of your project, this will determine the level of required documents and details. At the minimum, you can expect to provide the following:

  • Job Site Address
  • Property Owner full name and full contact information
  • Project Description - what you propose to do and where on the property you plan to construct or remove it
  • Sketch with measurements of the proposed work - to provide the following
  • Site Plan Drawings to scale and to the minimum requirements (you can see the site plan drawing requirements here:  cam103.pdf (Seattle, SDCI)
  • Other Drawings and Reports depending on the details of the work. You could need full architectural drawings, structural and framing drawings and structural reports.
  • You may also need to make sure your project doesn't exceed certain thresholds or boundaries - setbacks from property lines, total square footage of all buildings and impervious surfaces and environmental buffers and concerns

If your project is simple, below is a link to Seattle's SDCI S.T.F.I (subject to field inspection) qualifications infographic. While this infographic is particular to Seattle, you can expect similar requirements for other jurisdictions (where your property is located). If your project does not qualify for STFI type projects, you will need a considerable amount of additional information and documentation that includes the above list in addition to other potential requirements

We can help navigate this series of requirements, though some requirements will need to be outside of SPS. We do not provide architectural drawings or structural reports and drawings. We also do not perform environmental/critical areas review and investigation, but we can certainly do the work of locating them for you. We will arrange for them to review the scope and provide estimates directly to you. This referral service will be included in our services with a signed agreement and other required terms. We will become your concierge and liaison to the departments and other professionals to your project, to approach your project in the best and most sensible way possible.
